As a result of our AGM this year, two members were nominated to be awarded Life Memberhip of the Nursery and Garden Industry Tasmania - therefore it gives us great pleasure to honour and acknowledge Tony and Rose Vander Staay for their oustanding contribution and service to the Nursery and Garden Industry Tasmania.

​

Tony and Rose Vander Staay have been involved in the horticulure and nursery industry for over 60 years. Tony and Rose have have both played various indivual roles in the nursery industry, generously imparting their skills and knowledge, whilst also providing consistent and unwavering support across the industry base. 
With the support of a fantastic team, Tony and Rose have cultivated the brand of Westland Nurseries across the country, while holding key roles in the nursery
industry in Tasmania.

Recognition of Service Awards

As a result of this years Annual General Meeting it was unanimously moved the the Nursery & Garden Industry Tasmania would like to acknowledge some of the most important people in our industry.

​

A call went out to all our members to nominate those outstanding and long-standing employees with over 20 years service who have contributed a considerable amount of their time, energy and knowledge over their years of employment within the industry.

Bavid Bassett

Nominated by Allans Nursery for 33 years service to the nursery industry

David is awarded his Certificate of Service for his 33 years in the nursery industry.

David has mainly worked in the house plant section and does some propagation, grafting tomatoes whilst also working in the retail section.

Steve Bowen

Nominated by Allans Nursery for 33 years service to the nursery industry

Steve is one of the most valued employees at Allens Nursery.

Steve works in the soil mixing, maintenance and delivery section at Allens.

He has performed in almost every section of production, including 10 years in the landscaping section.

Rick Lockett

Nominated by Allans Nursery for 32 years service to the nursery industry

Rick works in the Seeding Program.

Rick sows nearly all the seeds for flower seedling production, he also programs all transplanting punnets and pots, whilst collecting and cleaning seeds.

Dennis Page

Nominated by Allans Nursery for 26 years service to the nursery industry

Dennis is the Foreman in charge of  Maintenance.

Dennis is hands on for practical repairs and maintenance, and personally attends to potted vegetable production as well as organizing staff for tasks within the nursery.

Evonne Van-Namen

Nominated by Allans Nursery for 22 years service to the nursery industry

Evonne is the Secretary Pay Master. Evonne has just recently retired although from time to time we still need her guidance with the Bookkeeping. Evonne was a most valuable employee.

Wayne French

Nominated by Tibballs Nursery for 36 years service to the nursery industry

Wayne started at Tibballs Nursery back in 1980 and was employed by Maurice and Bruce Tibballs. Wayne has held a variety of roles at Tibballs Nursery over his 36 years service. He started like most young people as a General Nursery Hand. Some of the other roles Wayne has performed are Main Delivery Driver, Soil Mixing, Training new employees and now Wayne is the Production Manager and operates the Transplanter in the Production Shed.

Chris Johnson

Nominated by Tibballs Nursery for 30 years service to the nursery industry

Chris started at Tibballs Nursery in 1984 as a 16 year old who was quite shy. Chris left Tibballs Nursery for 2 years in the late 1990’s. Chris was employed by Bruce Tibballs who taught Chris about spraying programs for different crops, fertigation and general plant care. Over the years Chris has built on the knowledge that Bruce passed onto him and is responsible for all Plant Care and plug production

Craig Tibballs

Nominated by Tibballs Nursery for 32 years service to the nursery industry

Craig started employment with Tibballs Nursery in 1984 & has worked in the business every year since. Craig is the third-generation family business owner of Tibballs Nursery, following his Grandfather Maurice & his Father Bruce.

Over the years Craig has worked hands-on in the business gaining valuable knowledge & skills.

Over the past 10 years Craig has managed the business, including handing the majority of the production planning.

In the last 5-6 years, Craig has implemented many changes to make the business more efficient by purchasing new machinery, tail lift trucks, a trolley system, new watering system & a new nursery site.

Shawn Keri

Nominated by Chandlers Nursery for 29 years service to the nursery industry

Shawn started working at Chandlers Nursery on work experience when he was 16, studying horticulture. Shawn was officially employed in 1995. Shawn primarily managed Chandlers production nursery for 15 years. Shawn is a valued member of the team who always goes above and beyond.

Allison Davis

Nominated by Chandlers Nursery for 24 years service to the nursery industry

After college Allison studied horticulture and came to Chandlers Nursery on work experience and was employed soon after. Allison was involved in a lot of propagation and production of seedlings. After a short break having children Allison returned to work part-time and now manages our seedlings on the weekends.

Michael Pitt

Nominated by Chandlers Nursery for 50 years service to the nursery industry

Michael was born into the nursery industry as his father was a nurseryman. When he was a little boy he would come home from school and help his dad mix potting mixes and propagate plants. Michael had a composting business for many years and has been employed with Chandlers Nursery for 26 years

David Droscher

Nominated by K & D Warehouse for 38 years service to the nursery industry

David started Waldock Nurseries in WA in 1978 and worked in various nurseries in Victoria, NSW and finally settling in Tasmania in 1994 where he became the garden buyer for K & D Stores for 18 years until 2012 where he became the Garden Manager.

Barbara Oakley

Nominated by K & D Warehouse for 29 years service to the nursery industry

Barbara commenced working the nursery industry at Westland Nurseries at Lenah Valley until moving to K & D (or J D Smith) Hobart store, moving to Glenorchy and then to Cambridge Garden and Outdoor.

Damian Kerin

Nominated by Granton Plants for 35 years service to the nursery industry

Damian began working at the Devon Nursery in 1980. Between 1991 – 94 he was teaching at the Wilson Training Centre before starting up the New Town Station Nursery in 1984. In 1986 Damian and Jane bought their Turners Road property soley to propagate and supply plants to New Town. In 1990 they opened Granton Plants. In 2014 Damian handed the reins over to Joe and began his newest venture – The Succulent Store. Damian was a former president of NGIT for 6 years, 7 years past president of the Hobart Garden Club, and sat on the board of the APG for 25 years.

Tony in his 31 years with Westlands has help build the company to where it stands today. Tony’s role as production manager is understated in what he actually does in his role for the company. 

Charlie Fontyn

Nominated by Westland Nurseries for 41 years service to the nursery industry

1975 Fontyns Nursery Longford, Clarks nursery, Westland Nurseries Rochelae - Legana Nursery - Sunshine Nursery – Charlies nursery back to Westland Nurseries.

Charlie has worked in a number of roles over the 41 years and is now a valued member of our dispatch team, there would not be many people in the industry that don’t know his face.

Peter has been a part of the Westland family since he was 16, is now and very major part of our successful business in his role and sales manager.
