Biosecurity Tasmania and industry are responding to a detection of blueberry rust on a property in the State's north.

A commercial grower notified Biosecurity Tasmania of the suspect plants earlier this week and testing by DPIPWE’s Plant Health Laboratories has confirmed the disease in six of 11 samples from the site. Click on the image to download the Blueberry Rust Factsheet.

Myrtle Rust (Puccinia psidii) is a fungus that can have serious effect on a large number of plant species.

Tasmanian nurseries have a key role in minimising the myrtle rust risk by ensuring all staff are able to recognise myrtle rust when handling stock and by ensuring on-site hygene standards are applied.

Nursery & Garden Industry Australia (NGIA), in partnership with Plant Health Australia (PHA) have developed The Biosecurity Manual for the Nursery Production Industry.

The manual has been designed to assist nursery producers and the industry from the introduction of new and invasive pests by offering them six simple routine biosecurity practices. Practices such as using only clean, pest-free and certified production nursery inputs, practicing good sanitation, frequently monitoring crops and reporting anything unusual  make good business sense by reducing the risk of biosecurity threats.

One of the key goals of the Tasmanian Biosecurity Policy is to minimise the threat to Tasmania's primary industries, natural environment and public health from disease and pest risks associated with plants and plant products brought into the State. In practice, this means that there are a large number of rules relating to the conditions of entry for a wide range of plants and plant products that are imported into Tasmania.
